Co-operating processes can communicate with each other using two main IPC models:

Shared memory model

Message passing model

In shared memory, processes communicate by sharing a common memory area.

In message passing, processes communicate by sending and receiving messages.

So, interprocess communication can be done using both shared memory and message passing model.
