Suppose you have a Linux file system where the block size is $2K$ bytes, a disk address is $32$ bits, and an i-node contains the disk addresses of the first $12$ direct blocks of file, a single indirect block, and a double indirect block. Approximately, what is the largest file that can be represented by an i-node?
Solution
Block size $=2K=2048$ bytes
Disk address size $=32$ bits $=4$ bytes
Number of addresses in one block:
$\frac{2048}{4}=512$
Direct blocks $=12$
Single indirect blocks $=512$
Double indirect blocks:
$512\times512=262144$
Total data blocks:
$12+512+262144=262668$
Total file size:
$262668\times2048=537944064$ bytes
In MB:
$\frac{537944064}{1024\times1024}\approx513$ MB
