In a class the ratio of boys and girls is 4 : 3. If 7 girls join the class, the ratio of boys and girls becomes 3 : 4. Then the number of boys in the class is:
Solution
Initial ratio $= 4 : 3$
Let boys $= 4x$, girls $= 3x$
After 7 girls join:
$\frac{4x}{3x + 7} = \frac{3}{4}$
$16x = 9x + 21$
$7x = 21$
$x = 3$
Number of boys $= 4x = 12$
