Solution

Let their present ages be 3x and 4x.

Six years ago, their ages were (3x - 6) and (4x - 6).

So, according to the question:
(3x - 6) / (4x - 6) = 2 / 3

Cross multiplying,
3(3x - 6) = 2(4x - 6)

Simplifying,
9x - 18 = 8x - 12

x = 6

Therefore, Ritu’s present age = 3x = 18 years.

Answer: 18 years

The sum of the ages of a son and father is 56 years; after four years the age of the father will be three times that of the son. What is the age of the father and the son, respectively?

Solution

Let the present ages be s (son) and f (father).

Given: s + f = 56 … (1)
After 4 years: (f + 4) = 3(s + 4) ⇒ f = 3s + 8 … (2)

Substitute (2) in (1):
s + (3s + 8) = 56 ⇒ 4s = 48 ⇒ s = 12.
Then f = 56 − 12 = 44.

Answer (father, son): 44 years, 12 years
